HISTORY: LINEE AEREE ITALIANE (LAI) was an Italian airline. Started operations in April 1947. In 1950, it was the first Italian company to operated transatlantic flights to the USA. The LAI ceased to operate on November 1, 1957, when the merger with Alitalia, also controlled by the IRI, became effective, and gave rise to Alitalia - Italian Airlines.
